FINAL REPORT

The following is the final capstone report covering a analysis and redesign of the Anne and Michael Armstrong Medical Education Building located on the John Hopkins University medical campus. It is the culmination of a collaboration between practitioners, professors and colleagues to develop a practical and innovative design through various professions within the building industry.

The lighting design for this report specifically analyzes four spaces unique to this building. The first three spaces are interior spaces and are the first floor auditorium, the fourth floor laboratory and the central atrium. The last space was the exterior courtyard.

Also analyzed was an electrical design in the building. The electrical layout for the motors on the penthouse level of the building are all individually located throughout the penthouse. This study covers a proposed Motor Control Center to centralize these motor starters as well as some other electrical equipment in one location to maximize space and wire lengths. Also studied was the comparison between the currently designed central transformer layout and a distributed transformer layout.

Due to the effects on the building from the lighting redesign, an analysis of the structure and mechanical system of the atrium was necessary to ensure a proper redesign of the central atrium.
